As a group, the original members of The Summer Quartet have been playing together since the days of high school orchestra (1998). Meet our revolving members:
Haley is the original first violinist and leader of The Summer Quartet. Raised in a musical family, she started playing the violin at age three. She graduated from Penn High School in 2001, where she spent four years in the Advanced Orchestra. She was concert master of the Penn High School Advanced orchestra for two years, and assistant concert master for one year. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Indiana University of South Bend. Here, she played in the IUSB Philharmonic and received the Indiana University Arts Excellence award in 2006. Haley taught 7th and 8th grade general music at John Young Middle School in Mishawaka for 11 years. She is the founder of the Marian High School Orchestra and former director of the St. Matthew Strings. Haley also earned her Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling from the School of Education at Indiana University of South Bend in 2012. Now, at a distance, Haley takes on the primary role of quartet manager; booking events, and communicating with clients, while performing with the group occasionally.
Melissa is an original member of The Summer Quartet. She started her musical path with the piano at the age of 3 and has been playing for over 21 years. She then began violin at the age of 7 and made music an avid part of her life. She has always been a part of orchestra and many other musical programs in the state of Indiana. Throughout high school she won numerous competitions in piano including the LaPorte Young Artists Competition, Fort Wayne Young Artist competition, and the South Bend Young artist competitions. Being the grand prize winner of the three competitions, she was able to perform with these orchestras in 2001 and 2002. Ms. Luan was also concertmaster for Penn High School and also the South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestra during her high school years. She then went on to pursue a degree in piano performance at IUSB and became a part of the prestigious Toradze Piano Studio. She graduated in spring 2007 with her bachelor’s degree with high distinction and also received the Indiana University Arts Excellence Award. Ms. Luan is currently pursuing her master’s at IUSB as well. In addition to her studies, she also has her own piano studio of over 40 students; ranging from age 4 to adult! She enjoys teaching and is excited to building more students in her studio.
Christina is a talented violinist primarily filling our second violin position. She has always fostered a love for music starting with violin at age 4 and including piano at age 6. Christina participated in the South Bend Youth Symphony and the IUSB Philharmonic Orchestra during her high school years, and played violin in the Notre Dame Symphonic Orchestra during her undergraduate years there. Christina also has experience leading praise and worship at her childhood church in Elkhart, IN. She still plays piano there to accompany the choir when needed. Christina loves to play violin and piano for weddings of family and friends. Christina officially joined The Summer Quartet in 2017. We are excited have her as an addition to the group as she has a history of playing with several of the quartet members for weddings and other events dating back to high school. Christina is currently a high ability language arts teacher for 5th and 6th grades with Concord Community Schools.
Christina is one of our alternate performers. She is skilled in violin and viola is one of our original members. Stemming from a musical family, she started playing piano at age 6, violin at age 10, and added viola as a new instrument when she was 16. She graduated from Penn High School in 1999 where she spent three years in Advanced Orchestra and participated in various instrumental ensembles for contests and performances, as well as participating in Side-by-Side orchestra with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. She attended the University of Notre Dame where she double majored in premedical studies and music theory and history. Christina's instrument concentration was violin. While at Notre Dame, she also participated as a violist in the symphony orchestra and the chamber orchestra which performs with the chorale. She graduated in 2004. Christina has maintained a private studio for eleven years is currently teaching private violin, viola, and piano lessons in her home.
Mary joined The Summer Quartet in 2015 and is our committed violist. Born and raised in the Michiana area, Mary comes from a musical family and grew up listening to her father play bass in a prominent local rhythm and blues band. She began playing viola in 4th grade orchestra and has been in love ever since! She played first chair in the South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestra for 6 years, competed in various music competitions around the state, and has been a member of both the Young Musicians Conference and the Indiana All State Orchestra. She graduated from Clay High in 2008 and went on to study music at Indiana University South Bend where she gave private lessons and sat first chair in the IUSB Symphony Orchestra. Mary graduated from IUSB with a degree in General Studies and minors in both Music History and Paralegal Studies. She is currently working as a paralegal in the South Bend community. In her free time she still loves to make music alongside her many gifted friends with whom she enjoys singing and playing the ukulele and guitar. Mary has subbed for the Summer Quartet since 2007, and joined the group full time in 2015.
David, our faithful cellist, is another one of our original members. He began playing cello at the age of four and has been playing for over 21 years. He was a member of the South Bend Youth Symphony for three years and was cello section leader of the Penn High School Advanced Orchestra for four years. David has participated in Fischoff Chamber Music competition ensembles and has competed in the division one ISSMA competitions, receiving first place ratings for both district and state competitions for numerous years; not only for solo cello, but for instrumental ensemble and vocal performances as well. He also joined Nancy Minks Chamber Singers of South Bend for two years and was the praise team leader at Grace United Methodist Church for four years. David attended Western Michigan University, majoring in Aviation Flight Science with minors in business and cello performance. He was a member of Western Michigan Symphony Orchestra and WMU cello studio, studying under Bruce Uchimura for five years. Currently, David is the president and owner of Howard's Home Improvement, Inc., providing full service property management, custom remodeling, additions, and home repairs in the South Bend, Kalamazoo, and Michiana areas with a sister company, Guys and Tools, Inc., in Bloomington, Indiana.
